Porvoo Voluntary Fire Brigade House

- 1890
Newander’s house was designed by architect Signe Hornborg (1862–1916), who was Europe’s first educated female architect. Hornborg completed her studies as an extra student, because of her gender, at Helsinki Polytechnical Institute in 1890. At the time of the design of Newander’s house, Hornborg worked at Elia Heikel’s office.
“Signe Castle”, nicknamed after its architect, is situated right next to Central Pori Church which was built in 1859–1863. The building is a typical Neo-Renaissance house built for bourgeoise in the late 19th century. It was completed in 1892.
