Toronto City Hall is based on a winning entry in an architecture competition. In 1958 Viljo Revell, assisted by young architects Bengt Lundsten, Heikki Castrén and Seppo Valjus won the international architecture competition of a new landmark city hall of Toronto. The leading ideas behind the design were the functionality of the spaces and the recognizability of the landmark building. The building consists of two separate curved towers, which are connected with a podium. Viljo Revell died suddenly in 1964, during the construction of the city hall. Lundsten, Castrén, and Valjus finished the project after the death of the principal architect. Toronto based landscape architect, Richard Strong, later also known for designing the Montreal Expo 67 amusement park, was the landscape architect of the city hall project.
