The design of the Malmi church is based on the winning entry in the invited competition held in 1976. The church was completed in 1981. The stone-built slaughterhouse next to it was renovated and made into parish offices according to a design by Erkki Heloma. It is one architectonic component in the yard composition of the new church design.

The principal architect of the building was Kristian Gullichsen from Gullichsen-Kairamo-Vormala Architects. Gullichsen was assisted by architects Lasse Kojo, Matti Linko and Aulikki Tiusanen.

The stone walls, the portal motif, the cloister-type arcade, the barrel vault and the patterns derived from Gothic brickwork could be interpreted as an attempt to give the work a historical depth. The central composition role of the yard is reminiscent of Aalto. The cylindrical structures are Leverenz loans, according to Kristian Gullichsen.

Bertel Gardberg designed the silverware for the church and forged a copper weathercock for the roof. Piila Saksela designed the church textiles. The bronze crucifix is by Arvo Siikamäki and the big tapestry in the church hall by Maija Lavonen.
