Liisankatu 14 Infill Apartment Buildings
- Helsinki
- 2022
The Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ large campus of 6000 students and 500 staff in Myllypuro, eastern Helsinki was completed in autumn 2019. The campus offers tens of different degree programmes, from bioanalytics to building technology, and from social services to civil engineering.
The Metropolia’s campus is located above the metro line and next to a ring road, the campus forms a distinct totality, despite its complex premise. Its overall mass is cleverly cut into four fan-shaped parts, which will be connected by narrow passages. The large complex has thus been given a lighter feel. The main façade cladding is made of perforated aluminium sheets, which alternate with windows in vertical stripes. The stripes create an abstract, sculptural impression, white at the same time emphasising the height of the building and dissipating its scale.
The interior is people-centred. The plan is identical on each floor, thus aiding orientation. The lobbies are spacious, and the classrooms are brightly lit. The spaces encircle an opening – an impressive void that cuts through all floors. The void shifts from side to side, creating interesting views and spatial series.
The interior colour scheme follows a contemporary colour palette, neutral main colours seasoned with a few accents. The different parts of the campus have their own colour accents, as seen in textiles, furniture, stairwells, entrance niches and hallways.
