The planning of Niittykumpu fires station began in 1987. The station was designed to be fire-resistant and is divided into two fire sectors. The main focus of planning was the dynamics of fast direct action. Niittykumpu fire station was designed by Gullichsen Kairamo Vormala Architects, the principal architect being Kristian Gullichsen. The station was completed in 1991.

The lounge and accommodation are on the first floor, looking down into the garage. There are firemen’s poles for quick access to the vehicles in case of an alarm.

The building’s function is revealed by the tower. This is no longer used for drying hoses, as in the historical fire stations, but for the ladder, rescue climbing and fire equipment practice.

The garage is steel-constructed, but in other respects, the construction is of uncoated steel pillars and concrete slabs cast in situ.

The facing material is painted concrete, with steel and glass and in the case of the practice tower clinker.
