Jyväskylä City Library and adult education centre is situated in the Jyväskylä downtown grid plan. The library was one of the earliest larger projects of Hyvämäki–Karhunen–Parkkinen Architects. The office is especially known as the architects of the National Opera in Helsinki.
The primary entrances to the public areas are from Vapaudenkatu Street and Cygnaeuksenkatu Street. The street elevation is dominated by the recessed terrace that leads to the entrance hall and the cafeteria. Beige ceramic tile and uncoated concrete are the principal elevation materials. The newspaper reading department on the ground floor opens to the Cygnaeuksenkatu street with window walls. The library’s lending section is located on the 1st and 2nd floors. The light-coloured public spaces are full of natural light from the lanterns on the roof.
