Saltkaret Observation Tower
- Björkby
- 2008
The parish centre lies in the residential district of Gerby, north of Vaasa’s town centre. Parish centre was the public building that was constructed to an area of 6000 residents. Its design is based on an invited competition in which the entrants were given the task of conceiving an overall plan for a new community centre.
The parish centre provides a venue for a variety of functions, including a children’s playgroup, a youth club, a mother’s club, a pensioners’ circle, a bilingual service, meetings, family gatherings, and a variety of religious functions.
The building has a timber frame, the fired brick elevations are whitewashed in traditional style. Certain minor details also feature copper and weather-resistant steel. All the outwardly visible wood sections are of polished birch.
Gerby Parish Centre was designed architects Heikki Aitoaho, Kaarlo Viljanen, Gunilla Lång-Kivilinna and Ari Tahvanainen.
