Violanpuisto Townhouses – The project started in 2006 when a small group of people was interested in building their own house as a joint-venture project. They assembled an adequate group of people for the scheme and put forward a proposal to the City of Helsinki for a rental contract concerning the property they saw suitable. One year later Helsinki City Council gave its approval for the idea. As there already were architects in the group, the actual planning was ready to begin. Architect Stefan Ahlman was recruited as a supervisor for the project.
The site of the Violanpuisto Townhouses is located in Hermanni, nearby Kalasatama area. The project was completed in 2009. New townhouses create a continuum to the district’s small-scale wood and stone architecture that had already existed in the form of an old, residential house on the site. The facades are refined by black-painted wood, white concrete, and bronze coloured fiber-cement elements.
Apartments are three-floored and narrow-framed. In every apartment, full-height windows open views towards surrounding park-area. This solution diminishes otherwise strongly the vertical character of the façade. Thanks to large windows, the surrounding park becomes part of the apartments and vice versa. In the garden, there is a larch-built terrace, which is a semi-common area.
