Maunolanmäki Daycare Centre and Huuhkajankuja Housing Block
- Kuopio
- 1989
The Puustelli school and multipurpose centre complex is on Puustellinaukio square, from which a pedestrian way leads to the blocks of housing to the west. The highest parts of the multipurpose centre are on this walkway and square, while in the schoolyard on the south side, the overhang roofs reach down almost to the child’s level.
The most public parts of the building are on Puustellinaukio, i.e. the library, which has a fan-shaped roof, and the school’s PE facilities, which are also used as an assembly room for the area. The pedestrian reaches the ‘arcade’ running right through the building via a shaft-like entrance between the two. Onto this arcade opens the other ground-floor facilities serving local inhabitants: the school dining room, library and special classrooms, the youth centre facilities and the schoolchildren’s day centre. The school’s homerooms and administration, which are of a gallery corridor on the first floor, can easily be closed off when the centre is used in the evening.
From the gallery level there are views of the schoolyard to the south through the top windows along the arcade, and through the open squares in the railing down into the arcade itself.
The school has forms 3–6 the comprehensive primary level, with eight basic groups in two parallel classes. There are some 240 pupils. In the public library of 10000 volumes has a reading and music listening rooms. The youth centre has an engine hall, hobby rooms and a music practice room.
The school children’s day centre has rooms for 25 children.
The outer shell of the building is in red brick, and the sheet metal roofs are painted white.
Planning began in 1979, and the building was completed in the autumn of 1985.
