Pitkäkangas primary school is the second stage in the Oulunsalo school complex. The first stage, the secondary school, was completed in 1983. The school has facilities for general teaching and a textile work classroom and caters for 350 pupils. The facilities shared by the two schools were already built at the same time as the secondary.
The way in which the very limited plot was used stemmed from the need to provide safe yards of a suitable size for all the various age groups. This also produced a versatile building on a friendly scale.Like the secondary school, the primary school has two storeys, partly because of the limited plot partly in order to provide inside connections on both floors between the schools. On the upper floor, they are linked by the administration facilities, and on the ground floor, the school dentist has rooms where the two parts meet.
The upper floor has a high hall, with the round tower of the teachers’ room at the end.The frame is completely unit-built, and the elevations are in red brick with wooden cladding accents, as on the secondary side.
The new school, designed by Heikki Taskinen, was completed in 1986.
