Hotel Mesikämmen in Central Finland was designed by architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in the early 1970s. The hotel was built in 1973–1976 and is an excellent example of the 1960s and 1970s hotel architecture. It represents the type of hotel architecture popular in Finland during that time: Brutalist holiday centres were developed in the countryside. The hotel is situated near the Ähtäri Zoo that opened its gates in 1973. Typical for the Suomalainens’ architecture, focal building materials are concrete and stone.

Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, and later Timo Suomalainen continued to redevelop the hotel, lates alterations being from the year 1996. The hotel and its focal interiors have been preserved well compared to many other Modernist hotel complexes.
