With three other research buildings designed 15 years ago by Heikkinen–Komonen Architects, this building represents the latest generation of research labs, containing formal and informal spaces for interaction between the scientists. The workspaces have been spread along the outer perimeter on all four sides, organised around a sculptural concrete core and benefiting from the natural light pouring in.

In addition to the in-situ concrete work, the surface materials include yellow anodized aluminium, which functions as an energy saving system for the building.

Centre for Systems Biology Dresden was selected in the Finnish Architecture Biennial Review 2018. Extract from the jury report:

“From the outside, one can hardly imagine the central core, whereas the façades make the workspaces visible to the outside. One can see out and work in daylight. When inside the building, one finds oneself in a more introverted space.”
